Provincial hotel guest satisfaction data
Dataestur collects hotel satisfaction information for the provinces of Spain and monitors price variations based on how far in advance the query was made
- The satisfaction indices are prepared using ratings and comments on social media for 3, 4, and 5-star hotels.
- Provincial data for each market since 2019 and the share of mentions on social networks of each origin can be consulted.
How does hotel satisfaction vary depending on the tourist's origin? Is the trend in a destination positive? Does accommodation category affect satisfaction? Below are some of the questions of the Dataestur dashboard on hotel satisfaction and prices. We review how it works:
Key indicators, an overview of hotel satisfaction
The hotel satisfaction index is a value between 0 and 100, with a higher value indicating greater satisfaction. It is compiled based on comments on social media about 3, 4 and 5 star accommodations. The dashboard shows the hotel guest satisfaction index for up to ten markets in each province. For example, in September the highest satisfaction in Las Palmas corresponds to tourists from Denmark, Sweden and Norway. In this way, for example, indices can be compared between different provinces.
The percentage of comments on social media reflects the proportion of comments of each market in a province. For example, in the case of Las Palmas, the markets with the highest satisfaction levels barely add up to 1%, the Spanish market being the largest, representing half of the comments. National market dominance is common in most provinces. In 2024, until September, the Spanish market share is of less than 30% in Barcelona (16%), the Balearic Islands (22%) and Malaga (29%). The graph shows the representation of each market in all provinces for the month of September 2024.
The indicator can be used to identify the weight and trends in each market with regard to the monthly comments received by the hotels in each province. For example, in the Balearic Islands, the representation of Germany stands out, especially high in winter and higher than that of Spain during the last spring.
Average price for bookings made one month in advance allow follow-up of the booking prices for bookings with a guest check-in during the week and with a guest check-in during weekends for 3, 4 and 5-star hotels. It also makes it easier to compare variations between categories in a destination. For example, by analysing the year-on-year price increases in September for weekend bookings, we can see a small difference in price, according to the accommodation category and province.
This data can be accessed from the general tab of the "Hotel Satisfaction and Pricing" dashboard.
Analysis and comparison options of the dashboard
The Dataestur publication delves into the analysis of the mentions used to compile hotel satisfaction indices and into price monitoring. Therefore, it compares monthly and weekly variations by means of using charts of the comments in the markets of origin of each province and the price trends in each category.
The comparison section has a table that tracks the average hotel prices in Spain by month and their variations depending on when the price is consulted (1 or 2 weeks or 1 or 3 months) and the start of the stay (weekend or working day).
Monitoring hotel guest satisfaction in each country
The data can be downloaded using the Dataestur API service (for more information, please read this article). The information enables general monitoring of hotel satisfaction. Below are some indicators developed using averages of provincial indices and adaptable to each province.
Average provincial hotel guest satisfaction indices and monthly trends: Please note that this is not about hotel satisfaction in Spain, but about the averages of provincial satisfaction indices. It can be used as a reference to make an estimate of the trends in guest satisfaction, but it does not correspond to the national guest satisfaction index due to the varying representation of the comments taken into account for each market and province.
Distribution of ratings in the provincial guest satisfaction indices: It shows the percentage of provinces that obtain very high, intermediate and lower scores in each month.
Ranking of provinces with the best hotel satisfaction index: September 2024 ranking for all hotels and a map with the provincial guest satisfaction index values, according to the accommodation category.
Ranking of source markets with the highest ratings in hotel satisfaction indices: based on the average ratings in all provincial hotel guest satisfaction indices in which the market is represented from the comments in social media. Please note that there are big differences in market share between markets. This data is from September 2024.
Average price one month in advance in Spain and distribution by province: The first chart shows how average prices have changed over the past year by hotel category. The maps show the average room prices for 3, 4 and 5-star hotels, by province.
Hotel guest satisfaction indices are complemented by the visitor satisfaction indices and perception at the destination, monitoring the overall tourist perception, satisfaction with tourist products, and perception regarding safety and weather conditions.
