How is tourism in Spain expected to look this summer 2025?

Travel and spending trends for this summer

  • New record travel and spending figures are expected.
  • Overall improvement in major international markets and domestic destinations

We provide you with travel and spending forecast data for this summer (July and August), prepared by SEGITTUR. This overview is further complemented by key air travel trends, based on supply and demand data from our air traffic data provider, also available on Dataestur.

A summer of more travel and spending

Estimates from SEGITTUR point to a summer with new record figures both in terms of number of trips and tourist spending.

An increase of 2.7% is expected in international tourist arrivals and 1.0% in domestic travel compared to summer 2024. In addition, international tourist spending is projected to grow at an even faster rate of 4.2%, significantly outpacing the growth in arrivals. In the case of domestic tourism, spending will also increase, albeit more moderately and in line with the volume of trips: +1.1%.

To complete this analysis, air travel trends for this summer are presented. While demand, as represented by the volume of flight searches, is slightly down (-6.9%), the supply of seats for travel to Spanish destinations is up +3.2%. This improvement is driven by international tourism, which is up by 5.1%, while domestic tourism sees a slight decline of 1.2%.

Among searches, those from international origin decrease less (-4.9%) than those from domestic origins (-19.2%). The slowdown in searches seen in Spain is common among the most popular destinations; furthermore, Spain remains one of the top-searched destinations.

The estimated travel and spending figures place the average spend per international tourist at €1,440 (+1.5%) and per domestic tourist at €323.30 (+0.1%).

By months and origins:

  • In the international marketsJuly will be the month with the highest growth in tourist arrivals, reaching figures very similar to those of August. Even the average spending in July is expected to be slightly higher than in August.
  • For domestic tourismAugust will continue to be the peak month, with 18% more trips than July. In addition, average spending in July will be €72 lower than in August.

Spending will grow faster than tourist numbers in Nordic and German markets

According to estimates, the main source markets are set to grow in terms of both the number of trips and tourist spending this summer.

The United Kingdom and France will maintain their leading positions, with moderate growth in both tourist arrivals and spending, ranging between +0.5% and +2.5%.

One of the most revealing indicators for understanding the evolution of tourism is to compare the rate of growth of spending with that of the number of visitors. This analysis makes it possible to see not only how many tourists arrive, but also how much they are willing to spend.

  • Nordic countries lead this trend: Their tourism spending will grow much faster than tourist arrivals. This could point to a visitor profile with higher purchasing power or to a tourism offer that has been able to increase its value per visitor.
  • Germany also stands out, with spending set to grow faster than the number of tourists, reflecting a significant improvement in average spending per traveller. For the time being, the supply of seats on flights is similar to that of the previous summer.
  • In contrast, the case of US is different: Although the number of tourists is expected to increase, tourism spending is expected to grow more slowly. Scheduled air capacity is currently 8.3% higher than the previous year, a growth rate close to the estimated growth rate for tourists (9.9%). Even so, demand is still sluggish if we look at flight searches from this market.

Estimates in the main destinations

As part of this summer’s forecasts, estimates have been made for five main destinations. According to these, estimates, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia will be the most visited destinations by international tourists. For domestic tourism, Andalusia is the most popular destination, followed by Catalonia.

International tourism is also seeing strong growth in the Canary Islands and Andalusia. There is an increase in domestic tourism to the Balearic Islands.

Air travel trends point to a seat capacity increase of over 5% in Andalusia, Catalonia and the Canary Islands. In the Valencian Community, capacity is expected to rise by around 4.8%, while the Balearic Islands will see a 1% increase, still remaining the most sought-after destination among this selection.

In terms of spending, Balearic Islands will lead international spending, while Andalusia will lead domestic spending.

In terms of spending growth, the destinations that stand out the most are Canary Islands and Balearic Islands, with a generalised positive evolution in most regions. The only exception is the Valencian Community, where a slight decline in domestic spending is expected.

The average spending for these destinations this summer is forecast as follows:

  • Andalusia: average spending is estimated at around €1,445 per tourist, compared to an average of €358 spent by domestic tourists.
  • Balearic Islands: average spending is estimated at €1,591 per stay, compared to €516 for domestic tourists.
  • Canary Islands: notable for an average international spend of €1,742, significantly higher than the average domestic spend of €439.
  • Catalonia: average spending by international tourists is estimated at €1,271, compared to €270 for domestic tourists.
  • Valencian Community: average international spending is estimated at €1,455, compared to €326 for domestic tourists.

These forecasts represent a change from the previous summer.

In most cases, average spending will increase only in the international market, although it should be borne in mind that spending and tourist/travel forecasts are generally positive. Thus, for example, for Catalonia an increase in spending and travel is forecast, so that the average spending could be slightly reduced due to an increase in travel that exceeds the increase in spending.

These trends are visualised in the following graph, divided into quadrants according to whether average spending per origin increases or decreases. Thus, Andalusia would be the destination that would manage to position itself in the upper right quadrant, i.e. it would manage to improve the average spending of domestic and international tourists.
